Event Overview

PIpeline Engineering - Lecture Series and Workshop
Houston, TX

Course Overview:

This course is aimed at early career pipeline engineers with a basic understanding of pipeline design, construction, operations and maintenance.  Course concepts include materials selection, design, integrity assessment, defect assessment, and threat/hazard identification and mitigation.  These topics will be discussed through lectures and reinforced through practical application. Participants can expect to gain practical knowledge in the development, implementation and ongoing management of pipeline integrity management programs.

Course Format:  (How this course is different)

Taught by industry recognized experts in the field of pipeline engineering, this course is unique in its university style approach and practical exercises.  Held at the world renowned Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta, Canada, participants will be immersed in lectures and exercises designed to build practical knowledge.  Working in groups on practical exercises in the evenings is expected.  Upon completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion issued by the Pipeline Systems Division of ASME.

Course Audience:

Pipeline engineers with 2 – 5 years of practical experience. (This is NOT for engineers with no experience – a basic understanding of design, construction and operation is assumed.)

To enhance learning and encourage individual participation, registration is initially limited to a maximum of 50 participants, with no more than five participants from any one company.

Course Topics:

• Pipe Design:  Review of industry standards for proper design to assure the integrity of the pipeline during operation.
• Pipeline Routing:  Overview of the key elements of routing on onshore pipeline.
• Pipeline Stress Design:  Identification of methods for determining the allowable stress in a pipeline as well as how defects may affect the allowable stress.
• Pipeline Construction:  Review of construction related issues that focus on maintaining the long term integrity of the pipeline.
• Pressure Test Design and Procedures:  Design and test procedure considerations for pipeline pressure tests for both new construction and existing operating pressure certification.
• Key Industry Failures and Lessons Learned:  Review historical industry failures where the cause was integrity related.  Documentation of what lead to the failure as well as what can be done to prevent a similar future incident.
• Integrity Assessment Methods:  Overview of the methods for assessing and repairing features discovered on the pipeline.
• Defect Assessment Methods:  Overview of the methods for assessing and repairing features discovered on the pipeline.
• Hazard (Threat) Mitigation and Remediation:  Define the process for removing and correcting issues that are identified to have caused a threat to the pipeline.
• Failure Analysis, Basics and Examples:  Teach the process of how to preserve evidence at the site of an incident and how to transport the evidence to the lab for investigation.  Techniques of analysis in the lab to determine the cause of failure will also be covered.
