The Gas Lift Workshop started in 1980 in conjunction with the API Gas Lift task group headed by Jack Blann, with Joe Clegg, Herald Winkler and John Martinez as early organizers and contributers along with others.  Cleon Dunham was an early contributor and participant.
 
The early workshops were held in Houston, New Orleans, and Dallas.  As most of the organizers and participants were based in the Houston area the majority of the early workshops were held there.  The international workshops started in Aberdeen, then Kuala Lumpur, Rio de Janeiro, and now Doha.
 
Cleon Dunham expanded and made the workshops much more appealing with the continuous education courses, breakout sessions, and exhibitions.
