Internship Requirements

The following three items should be submitted by each candidate:

  • Brief Professional Resume
  • Provide an essay no more than one typed page in length, written by the candidate, expressing his/her interest in the internship. The essay should indicate an area of interest in the IPTI and what skills they hope to obtain from their experience as an intern.
  • Letters of reference from a senior ASME member and the student's Department Chair having knowledge of the intern candidate's abilities and interest. The letters may accompany the resume and essay or be sent directly to the IPTI office.

Screening & Election
The IPTI Executive Committee will screen the applications and a finalist among the qualified candidates will be elected at the Regional Student Conference Student Sections Committee meeting in March (of the year in which they apply). Each year, one student member of ASME International will be elected and expected to participate as an intern in IPTI activities. Activities include attending Executive Committee business meetings, IPTI sponsored conferences, training workshops, and completing a report and presenting what they have achieved to the Executive Committee at the last meeting of their internship. The intern shall report directly to their mentor; Past Chair of the IPTI, and to the Director of Operations for financial reimbursement and other directly-related ASME International questions. The expenses of the student will be reimbursed in accordance with ASME policy P-4.5, "Travel Expense Contribution".

Additional Information
The Intern should attend the IPTI Executive Committee meetings, which occur in February, at OTC (April/May), at the July Retreat, and Fall meeting (mid-October). The official term begins for incoming interns (and ends for outgoing) at OTC. Outgoing interns are expected to attend this orientation and participate in discussions regarding direction of the program and provide assistance with member and operating procedures.The intern shall meet with a mentor (Past Chair) on the committee to discuss interest and develop goals for the coming year. Interns may participate in a short-term project of interest with the assistance of the mentor. Examples of issues that may be investigated are student member retention, activities for students to participate in, conferences, industry sponsored design competitions, increased participation in the Petroleum Division by students, women, and minorities.The student intern should be prepared to provide a brief presentation on the student intern program at an IPTI luncheon, dinner, technical chapter meeting, training seminar or at a local ASME Student Section meeting.The intern should be available to provide interviews of feedback on the Student Intern Program for use by the IPTI in generating publicity for future programs. The intern shall also provide feedback to the Executive Committee to enhance the future of the program.The Student Intern Program will require interns to spend a few days a year away from their classes. This time away may not be for technical sessions but to participate in the business and governing affairs of the IPTI, therefore participation in the program should be supported by the candidate's Department Chair.In return, the student receives valuable professional development experience. The student will enhance his/her interpersonal relationships, meeting skills, and numerous opportunities to network with experienced engineers in the industry.The IPTI Chair shall send a letter of appreciation to the succeeding candidate's Department Chair (with prior approval of the candidate) upon acceptance into the program. The letter shall identify the direct and indirect benefits to the candidates and the school. The intern shall receive a certificate from the IPTI at the end of their term.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be current student members of ASME International and should have completed his/her junior year and be interested in a petroleum related industry. Past and/or current volunteer involvement in ASME is preferred, but not required.
