The objective of the petroleum division’s student scholarship program is to promote student interest in engineering in the petroleum industry.

At ASME-IPTI's Petroleum Division, we believe that outstanding engineering begins with a solid educational foundation.  We give out $22,000 each year to promote student interest in engineering in the petroleum industry.  We help students reach their academic goals.

Students interested in any phase of the Petroleum Industry including Drilling, Completions, Facilities, Pipe Lines, Rigs, Operations, Materials, Equipment Manufacturing, Plant Design and Operation, Maintenance, Environmental Protection and Innovations are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

High School Scholarships

Two scholarships of $1,000 each will be given to two individual high school students.

Eligibility
The high school student must meet the following criteria:

• Have a pre-declared major in the engineering field on his/her application form to college.

• Have a grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 system and provide an official original transcript (xerox and electronic copies and/or faxes are not acceptable).

• Be approved by their high school guidance counselor and principal and have a letter of recommendation from a teacher from the disciplines of engineering, math, and/or science.

• Provide a one page, typed, double-spaced essay indicating the applicant’s interest in some phase of mechanical engineering.


College Scholarships
Five scholarships of $2,000 each will be given to 5 individual college students in an Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET) university or college (domestic) or equivalent (international).

Eligibility
• The college student must have completed at least 1 semester or 2 quarters of an engineering curriculum but still have at least 1 semester or 2 quarters of under graduate school remaining June of each year of the scholarship award.

• Be a current member in good standing of ASME Student Chapter and ASME International.

• Submit a letter of recommendation from the Section Faculty Advisor and, have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 system.
• Have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 system.

• Provide an official transcript of current enrollment from an ABET accredited (domestic) university or equivalent (international) college’s registrar office (xerox and electronic copies and/or faxes are not acceptable).

• Provide a one page, typed, double-spaced essay (ASME format or another professional discipline’s format) that indicates the applicant’s interest in some phase of the petroleum industry.

Fellowship Scholarships
The ASME Petroleum Division Graduate Fellowship offers one yearly fellowship award that provides financial support to a student who has earned a bachelor degree in an engineering curriculum and has been accepted in a graduate engineering school. The ASME Petroleum Division seeks to ensure the vitality of the human resource base in the mechanical engineering field as applied to the petroleum industry and will award an annual fellowship of $10,000 to the most qualified applicant..

Eligibility
• The graduate student must be accepted for enrollment as an entering first-year student in a graduate degree program in mechanical engineering.

• Be a member in good standing of ASME International and have an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 system.

• Provide official transcripts from their undergraduate university or college.

• Not be attending school as a member of any branch of the Armed Services nor is obligated to serve an enlisted period in any branch of the Armed Services following graduation.

• Submit a letter of recommendation from a professor in your undergraduate engineering technology degree granting department and a letter of recommendation from an ASME member who is currently employed in the petroleum industry.

• Submit a maximum of two page and a minimum of one page, typed, double spaced essay (ASME format or another professional discipline’s format) detailing the student’s interest in the petroleum industry and what challenges the industry offers them and what value they may add to the industry.

Submission and Selection
Interested High School Students, ASME Student Members and ASME International Members should submit his/her complete Student Scholarship Application to the ASME IPTI for review and evaluation. Incomplete applications will not be considered. You may submit the application electronically or print it and mail it to the following address:

Deadline for Application
The deadline for submission is May 16 of each calendar year. Applications must be postmarked before or on the deadline date to be considered. The applications will be reviewed by a committee to be named by the Executive Committee of ASME Petroleum Division consisting of engineers from industry and faculty members from academic institutions. Notification of scholarship awards will be made by July 15 of each calendar year. A notification letter will be sent to each applicant within a week of receiving it. Please do not call the office for information regarding the status of your application. Scholarship awards will be presented at the ASME IPTI Awards and Volunteer Gala held during November. Scholarship recipients and their immediate family will be invited to the Gala.
